Paul Banning RI RSMA

From the 30th November 2012 until the 19th January 2013, The Minster Gallery in Winchester will be showing a selection of new works by Paul Banning RI RSMA.

Born in Trinidad in 1934, Paul was educated at Clifton College in Bristol and studied design at the West of England College of Art.  He is a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Wapping Group.  He has a unique ability to handle water media painting and his watercolours show us a masterly control of the medium which led him to win the 2011 Turner Watercolour Award. His handling of oils is equally brilliant and we are pleased to be able to display both of these talents at The Minster Gallery in his broad representation of English landscapes, seascapes, exotic scenes from his travels and more technical subjects such as the interior of boat sheds and new and old buildings.

He exhibits regularly in the major exhibitions at the Mall Galleries and has hung in the RA Summer Exhibition, The Singer and Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition, The Lynne Painter- Stainers Exhibition in 2007 and the RWS Sunday Times watercolour competition in 2009 and has won many prestigious art prizes.

He would say he is a traditional watercolour artist.  His method of painting involves many thin glazes of transparent paint, giving the work a sense of colour and depth. He will often apply as many as twenty layers of paint before the work is completed. As a plein air painter, he will always try to finish work on site. With oils, he often gathers material with a small pochade box, producing 8 x 10 inch small works that are then the basis for the development into larger finished paintings.

Paul has been a long standing artist here at The Minster Gallery and has huge and loyal following amongst our clients, who have been keenly awaiting this new collection of works.
