Hugh Martin

Hugh Martin was born in London in 1954 and now lives in Fareham, Hampshire. He studied at City & Guilds , London Art School, from 1988-1991, and has exhibited at the RHA Dublin Summer Show in 1988, 1999 and 2009.

He has worked in many fields; from that of a fitter and welder to conservation assistant for the National Museum of Ireland. He would
say that every job has introduced him to new sets of materials and new possibilities of their use. His great passion is walking, since at that speed
the mind is open to unlooked for experiences and images which normally one is too busy to notice. He seeks to explore the concept that the true miracle is that anything exists at all!

He has just completed his third pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella and the images gathered on these journeys form the basic structure
of much of his recent work, which can be in wood, metal or stone or any combination of these materials and comprise a narrative of a journey through an abstracted landscape.
